
Stop Wasting Energy on Your Glass Bead Annealing
Let’s be honest: annealing is usually the biggest energy hog in the entire production line. If you’re still using old-school resistive heaters, you’re basically paying to heat the air around your glass rather than the glass itself. It’s a waste of money. We do things differently. We use shortwave infrared (IR) lamps to put that energy exactly where it belongs—inside the material.
How it actually works
Here is the trick: these IR lamps hit the specific absorption bands of the glass. Instead of waiting for a whole oven chamber to get hot, the radiation just sinks right into the bead. It’s fast. Really fast. Because you aren’t fighting the air, your ramp-up time drops and your kilowatt-hours per kilo plummet. You get a quicker soak and a cooling curve that you can actually control.
Getting the power right
We build these lamps for high-density output. By tweaking the wattage and voltage, you can dial in the intensity. The best part? High-wattage tubes take up less space. That means you can squeeze more heating zones into a shorter conveyor belt. But you have to be careful. You’ve got to balance that power with your line speed. If you crank the lamps to the max while the line is crawling, you’re going to overheat your beads. You need a control system that actually “understands” the thermal mass of your glass, otherwise, you’re just burning electricity for no reason.
Setting them up (and keeping them running)
These lamps are designed to be drop-in replacements for those tired, aging elements. We use standard connectors, so you aren’t spending all day messing with the wiring. Just a heads-up: the quartz envelopes protecting the filaments are tough against the heat of the lehr, but they’re fragile. One wrong move or a clumsy bump during installation and crack—there goes your tube. And please, double-check your measurements. Your lamp length has to match your heater block perfectly. Even a tiny gap of a few millimeters can create cold spots, which leads to internal stress in the beads. One last thing: keep your reflectors polished. If they get oxidized and dull, your efficiency disappears. Keep them shiny, and keep your costs down.
