
Shortwave or Medium-wave? Picking the Right Quartz Lamp for Your Fabric
When you’re trying to figure out which IR lamp to use for drying fabric, it really comes down to one thing: how deep do you need that heat to go? We use high-purity quartz glass for both options. Why? Because these things get incredibly hot, and you don’t want your tubes warping or popping the moment they hit temperature.
Getting the heat where it needs to be
Shortwave lamps run hot. Like, really hot. They blast energy right onto the surface. If you’re working with synthetic blends or just need to flash-dry some surface moisture, this is your best bet. It’s instant. You flip the switch, it’s hot, and you can crank up your line speed. But if you’re dealing with thick cotton or heavy industrial textiles, shortwave can be a bit too aggressive. That’s where medium-wave comes in. Medium-wave runs a bit cooler and the heat actually soaks into the fibers. It’s a gentler process. It keeps you from scorching the top layer of the fabric while the core is still damp.
A quick warning on the hardware
Since we’re using quartz to handle the thermal load, the glass is tough—but it isn’t invincible. The more wattage you cram into every millimeter, the more stress the glass feels. If you’re going with a high-density shortwave tube, please, double-check your mounting brackets. Give the glass some room to breathe and expand. If you clamp it too tight, the tube will snap during a cold start. It’s a loud, frustrating mistake that’s easy to avoid.
Speed vs. Control
Here’s the trade-off. Shortwave is the speed king. It cuts your drying time way down. But it’s intense. If your fabric is delicate, you risk burning the top layer before you even realize it. Medium-wave is all about control. It’s a gradual cure. The catch? You’ll either need a larger setup or you’ll have to slow down your conveyor to get the same result. Just match the wavelength to how dense your fabric is. And a pro tip: don’t overdo the wattage if your conveyor isn’t fast enough to move the fabric away from the heat.
