
Why those old bathroom heat lamps are finally dying out
We’ve all been there. You step out of a hot shower into a freezing bathroom, flip the switch on those old-school heat lamps, and… nothing. Or worse, you get that blinding glare that feels like you’re staring into the sun, only for the bulb to pop a few months later because a bit of steam got inside. It’s a pain. That’s why more people are ditching the lamps for wall-mounted infrared (IR) panels. They just make more sense. The trick is how they actually warm you up. Most bathroom heaters try to warm the air. But think about a tiled bathroom—the air cools down almost the second it hits the walls. It’s a losing battle. Infrared is different. Instead of fighting the air, it sends out waves that warm you and the surfaces around you directly. You feel the heat the moment you turn it on. No waiting around shivering while the room slowly catches up. Plus, you aren’t paying to heat a bunch of air that just gets sucked right out by the exhaust fan. Then there’s the “water problem.” Bathrooms are brutal on electronics. Steam gets everywhere. Most standard heaters have seals that eventually fail, which leads to corrosion or—even worse—a short circuit. That’s where the IP rating comes in. If you’re looking at these, you want something rated IP44 or IP65. Basically, it means the heating elements (whether they’re carbon fiber or quartz) are tucked away behind tempered glass or aluminum. It keeps the splashes away from the electrics. We also pay a lot of attention to the wiring. Humidity loves to eat through cheap insulation, which is why using moisture-resistant connectors is a must. It stops that annoying “burn out” that happens when dampness creeps into the system. A few things to keep in mind before you swap them out. The great thing about IR panels is that they don’t take up much space. They’re way less bulky than those old convection heaters. But, a heads-up: these panels can pull a lot of power. Before you install one, just double-check that your breakers and wiring can handle the load. You don’t want the power cutting out right when you’re halfway through drying off. And one last tip? Watch where you put them. If you put a high-wattage panel in a tiny shower stall, it can get oppressive—almost too hot. Position it carefully so you get a nice, cozy glow without feeling like you’re standing inside an oven.
